Transgender Community to Participate in 2024 General Elections

The transgender community has made a significant announcement regarding their participation in the upcoming general elections set for February 8, 2024. Representatives of the community, including Bindia Rana, Dr. Meereb Awan, and Shehzadi Rai, conveyed this decision during a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club on Friday.

In addition to their political involvement, the transgender community leaders disclosed plans for the Moorat March scheduled at Frere Hall, Karachi, on November 19. This march aims to advocate for fundamental rights, including the right to inheritance, a matter raised by Shehzadi Rai who highlighted the alarming prevalence of violence against trans individuals in the name of honor.

During the press conference, the leaders underscored the challenges faced by the transgender community, particularly the scarcity of job opportunities. They called for an end to policies that disregard the rights of trans people and urged the government to eliminate discriminatory practices against them from the legal framework.

The Sindh government faced criticism for its failure to fulfill the job quota allocated for the trans community. Bindia Rana pointed out that the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has ceased issuing X identity cards, a development raising concerns within the transgender community.

Dr. Meerab emphasized the significance of the Moorat March, scheduled from 3 pm to 6 pm on November 19, urging widespread participation. The march serves as a platform for the community to voice their concerns and advocate for the rights and dignity of transgender individuals.
