Justice Yahya Afridi Set to Be Sworn In as Pakistan’s 30th Chief Justice Today

Justice Yahya Afridi is set to be sworn in today, Saturday, as Pakistan’s 30th Chief Justice, in a ceremony at the President’s House at 11:00 a.m., where President Asif Ali Zardari will administer the oath.

The event will be attended by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, military leaders, governors, chief ministers, and senior federal ministers.

Justice Afridi was selected for the role following the retirement of Justice Qazi Faez Isa, through a new process established by the 26th Amendment, which mandates that the Chief Justice be chosen from among the three most senior judges, as recommended by a Special Parliamentary Committee.

Justice Afridi, known for his professionalism and encouragement of open arguments in court, was born on January 23, 1965, in Dera Ismail Khan. He holds an MA in Economics and an LLM from the University of Cambridge.

His career includes serving as Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court, and he has extensive experience as both a high court advocate and Supreme Court lawyer, along with teaching and roles as assistant advocate general and federal counsel.
