New data from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) reveals that recent climate events, including mass bleaching, cyclones, and flooding, have caused significant coral deaths across the Great Barrier Reef. Between August and October, surveys found up to 72% coral mortality on 12 reefs, with some areas showing over a third of coral cover lost, marking the worst decline in coral health in 39 years.

Scientists attribute the damage to summer heat, Tropical Cyclones Jasper and Kirrily, and intense flooding, all intensified by climate change. Researchers warn that the reef’s resilience is under extreme pressure, with mass bleaching now a recurring threat.
The reef, known for its rich biodiversity, is facing a bleak future unless more aggressive climate action is taken. WWF-Australia calls for stronger emission reduction targets to protect this vital ecosystem.
