Shahram Azhar, the former frontman of Laal, has made his musical comeback after a ten-year hiatus with the release of Band Baahar Se, a soulful rendition of Jaun Elia’s poetry. The track is part of his upcoming album Banbaas: Exile in Wilderness, which explores themes of displacement and introspection. The album marks a shift from Shahram’s earlier revolutionary anthems to a deeper, more reflective journey through Urdu poetry.
In a recent conversation, Shahram shared his desire to introduce younger generations to the richness of Urdu poetry, particularly the philosophical depth it carries. He described Jaun Elia’s work as deeply existential, resonating with today’s youth who seek to challenge societal norms. The album also includes works by other notable poets like Parveen Shakir, Iftikhar Arif, and Ibne Insha, blending classical compositions with a touch of modernity.

Shahram has returned to his roots in Hindustani classical music, creating a soundscape that intertwines traditional instruments like the flute and violin with carefully chosen raags. He emphasized the absence of autotuning in his tracks, favoring an authentic and organic sound. According to Shahram, music remains a spiritual pursuit rather than a path to fame, as he continues his academic career in the UK while crafting music that connects with the soul.
The album’s title, Banbaas, reflects Shahram’s personal journey and the universal theme of exile, drawing parallels to the emotional and physical reckonings depicted in Hindu mythology. Shahram’s reflective approach to music aims to inspire listeners while staying true to the essence of Urdu poetry and classical aesthetics.
