Bangladeshi Children Held in Secret Detention Centers, Report Reveals

Bangladeshi Children

A shocking new report by the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances has exposed the illegal detention of children in secret jails in Bangladesh. The commission revealed that several children, some as young as infants, were detained in black-site facilities alongside their mothers.

The report details harrowing cases, including the use of babies as leverage during interrogations, with reports of mothers being denied the ability to breastfeed their children as a form of psychological torture.

Among the reported cases, a pregnant woman and her two young children were subjected to beatings in a detention center. Another witness recalled being held as a child with her mother at a facility run by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), where her mother disappeared without a trace.

The commission’s preliminary findings also implicated Sheikh Hasina, the ousted prime minister, in crimes against humanity, including the unlawful abduction and disappearance of hundreds of political opponents during her tenure. Hasina, who fled to India after being overthrown by a student-led revolution in August 2024, now faces arrest warrants for her role in the human rights abuses.

The findings shed light on the widespread human rights violations under Hasina’s government, which reportedly included the extrajudicial killing of political adversaries.
