Since Wednesday, over 100 people have lost their lives due to unusually heavy rainfall affecting parts of India and Nepal. The weather department has forecasted more rain for the region.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warnings for various weather risks on Wednesday, including heatwaves in the west and thunderstorms in the eastern and central parts of the country. These torrential rains are not typical for the region, as the monsoon season generally begins in June.

In Bihar, 82 people have died in rain-related incidents over the past two days, according to the state’s disaster management officials. Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, 18 people have died due to lightning and storm-related accidents. In Nepal, at least eight people have died from lightning strikes and heavy rain, according to the National Disaster Authority.
The IMD has predicted more rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over central and eastern India through Monday. India has also been experiencing intense heatwaves in recent years, which have claimed numerous lives. The IMD had warned last week that April would see higher-than-usual temperatures across much of the country.
