Heavy rains in Pakistan have caused widespread devastation, resulting in the death of at least 54 people in the past 24 hours. This brings the total number of rain-related deaths in the country to 178 over the past three weeks, according to official reports.
The heavy rains have triggered flash floods, inundating several villages and urban areas. The Pakistan Meteorological Department stated that rainfall this month has increased by 82% compared to the same period in July 2024. The situation has worsened since June 26, with Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Balochistan all reporting significant rainfall and casualties.
The 54 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours occurred in Punjab province, which saw 124% more rainfall between July 1 and July 15 compared to the same period last year. The continuous downpours have led to flooding in major cities such as Rawalpindi and Lahore. In the Jhelum district of Punjab, a cloudburst triggered flash flooding, prompting authorities to use boats to evacuate stranded residents.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a flood alert on Thursday, urging local officials to remain on high alert. Tourists were advised to avoid traveling to affected areas where the heavy rains could lead to landslides and road blockages. Footage from local news channels showed an army helicopter rescuing a family stranded by a flash flood on the outskirts of Rawalpindi.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the coming days, particularly in Islamabad, Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and other affected areas. Authorities have warned that this year’s rains could mirror the devastating 2022 floods, which caused massive destruction and claimed the lives of 1,737 people. The continued heavy rains in Pakistan highlight the increasing risk of natural disasters, with experts urging the government to take more preventive measures.
As the situation develops, Pakistan remains on high alert, with emergency response teams working tirelessly to assist the affected population.
