An Australian couple, Langley Kidby, 77, and Beverley Kidby, 71, embarked on an adventurous journey from London to Melbourne in a 102-year-old car, mirroring the historic route of Francis Birtles, who made the same trip in 1927. Their vehicle, a 1922 Bean car similar to Birtles’, was purchased from a museum to maintain the authenticity of the journey.

Starting their expedition on April 1, the seasoned travelers crossed through Europe, Turkiye, Iran, and ventured into Pakistan’s Balochistan province. Their plan was to continue through Lahore and enter India via the Wagah border. However, the scorching heat in Sindh province, with temperatures soaring above 125.6 degrees Fahrenheit (52 degrees Celsius), compelled them to alter their course.

The vintage car, lacking air conditioning, became unbearable to drive in the extreme temperatures. Consequently, they opted to have the vehicle transported by truck from Sukkur to Lahore, where they intend to resume their voyage towards India, followed by Malaysia, Singapore, and ultimately back to Australia.

Mohsin Ikram, the president of the Vintage and Classic Car Club of Pakistan (VCCCP), facilitated their travel arrangements throughout Pakistan. He ensured the couple’s safety and provided assistance in navigating the country. The Kidbys were full of praise for the warmth and hospitality extended to them by the Pakistani people, as well as the expertise of local mechanics who aided in repairing their vehicle.

Beverley Kidby expressed gratitude for the warm reception they received and encouraged other foreigners to explore Pakistan and immerse themselves in its rich hospitality. Ikram emphasized the potential for Pakistan to enhance its motoring tourism with improved policies, highlighting the benefits it could bring to the country.
