The Benevolent Journey

Sulaiman Al-Rajhi has passed away. He was one of the world’s top 20 most generous individuals.

In the city of Al-Qassim, Saudi Arabia, there is a garden of date palms with over 200,000 trees, dedicated to Allah. The garden yields an annual production of 10,000 tons of dates, making it the largest endowment on cultivated land.

The income from this garden is used to build mosques in various countries, support charitable initiatives, and provide iftar meals at the holy sites of Mecca and Medina. This magnificent garden was endowed by Saudi Arabia’s most generous person, Sulaiman Al-Rajhi.

Sulaiman Al-Rajhi’s journey started from a life of poverty. Once during his school days, the school administration organized a recreational tour and asked each student to contribute one riyal. However, Sulaiman didn’t have even one riyal with him. It deeply saddened him. Just before the tour, he received the results of his exams, and he had secured the top position in his class. As a reward, a Palestinian teacher gave him one riyal.

With time, Sulaiman’s dedication and hard work paid off, and he established a bank named after himself in Jeddah. The Al-Rajhi name spread across all of Saudi Arabia’s banks.

Later on, he set out to find his retired Palestinian teacher. When they met, the teacher’s financial situation was difficult, and he struggled to make ends meet. Sulaiman then placed the teacher in his car and told him that he owed him a debt. The teacher was puzzled and asked how a poor person like him could owe anyone. Sulaiman reminded him of the one riyal the teacher had given him years ago. The teacher smiled and asked if Sulaiman wanted the riyal back.

In response, Sulaiman pointed to a house and a luxury car in front of it, saying, “This house and car are yours now, and from today, all your expenses are on us.”

The Palestinian teacher’s eyes filled with tears of gratitude. And that marked the beginning of Sulaiman Al-Rajhi’s benevolent journey.
