Bilawal Announces Zardari as PPP Candidate for President

In the midst of widespread protests across the country over alleged massive rigging in the February 8 general elections, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has issued a warning of potential protests if democracy or the federation is perceived to be in jeopardy.

Addressing a Youm-e-Tashakur rally in Thatta on Sunday to commemorate the election victory in Sindh, Bilawal called upon his party supporters to be prepared to take to the streets when called upon, reminiscent of the activism seen during the tenures of PPP founders Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.

Bilawal emphasized that the PPP has raised the slogan of “Pakistan khappay” (We want Pakistan) to address the political uncertainty that has arisen across all four provinces.

He stated that the PPP intends to lodge complaints regarding election rigging with the appropriate legal forums. However, if justice is not served through these channels, Bilawal warned that protests alongside the masses would be organized.

While expressing his reservations about the potential harm street protests could cause to the country and the federation, Bilawal underscored the need for peaceful political engagement.

Bilawal also highlighted instances of violence against PPP candidates in various regions, suggesting that the party’s mandate had been compromised.

Regarding the formation of the upcoming government in Sindh, Bilawal asserted that it would be based solely on Form 45, the official document used to record election results.

With regards to the presidency, Bilawal announced that his father, Asif Ali Zardari, would be the PPP’s candidate. He expressed confidence that Zardari’s leadership would be instrumental in easing political tensions and safeguarding the federation.

Bilawal urged all political parties to prioritize the interests of the people over their own objectives, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation and collaboration in preserving democracy and national unity.

Furthermore, Bilawal disclosed the PPP’s intention to seek rights for flood victims in Sindh and Balochistan in exchange for support for the prime ministerial candidacy.

He rejected an offer from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for a three-year term for them and two years for him in a proposed coalition government, asserting his confidence in being elected prime minister by the people of Pakistan.

In summary, Bilawal’s statements underscore the PPP’s commitment to democratic principles, advocacy for electoral justice, and dedication to serving the interests of the people.
