Donkey prices in Pakistan Rise due to increased Chinese Demand

The price of donkeys in Pakistan has significantly risen in recent months, with some donkeys selling for as much as Rs. 300,000. This surge is largely driven by increasing demand from China, where donkey hides are used in the production of cosmetics and traditional medicines.

The rise in donkey prices has made it difficult for local buyers to afford donkeys, leading to a decrease in domestic sale and purchase. The demand from China has outpaced local needs, with traders actively buying donkeys for export.

In July 2024, the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce suggested that Pakistan should consider exporting live donkeys to China, rather than just hides. This move could help boost Pakistan’s trade with China, while addressing the rising demand.

Currently, there are no restrictions on exporting donkey hides, but protocols for exporting donkey meat are still being developed. The growing market for donkey-related products in China is expected to continue influencing the prices in Pakistan.
