CEO of ChatGPT Wants AI Regulations to Prevent Potential Risks

In his statement before the US Congress on Tuesday, Sam Altman, the CEO of the OpenAI company that created ChatGPT, argued for governmental control of artificial intelligence.

A chatbot technology called ChatGPT provides responses that resemble those of real people.

Altman established OpenAI in 2015. The image-maker DALL-E is one of the numerous AI products that it has created.

Altman’s statement comes a week after two European parliamentary committees approved a draught law that would regulate artificial intelligence.

At a Senate judiciary subcommittee hearing, Altman said, “OpenAI was founded on the belief that artificial intelligence has the potential to improve nearly every aspect of our lives, but that it also creates serious risks.”

According to Altman, generative AI will eventually “address some of humanity’s biggest challenges, like combating climate change and curing cancer.”

He stated, “We believe that governmental regulatory engagement will be crucial to limiting the hazards of more potent models.

Before AI models are made public, Altman suggested legislation that would need a mix of licensing and testing. He also advocated for labelling and greater international coordination.

“I believe that the US should take the lead and act first here, but we do need something global to be effective,”

Altman stated that a new regulatory body should enact protections to prevent AI models from being able to “self-replicate and self-exfiltrate into the wild.”
