The Icon of the Seas, measuring nearly 1,200 feet long and weighing 250,800 gross tons, was berthed in Costa Maya, Mexico at the time of the incident. Although the vessel briefly lost power, backup systems were promptly activated.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean stated that crew members managed to control the blaze, emphasizing that all crew are trained to handle such emergencies. Passengers were informed about the situation through onboard announcements, with social media posts from a Facebook group indicating minor disruptions that were swiftly resolved.

The $2-billion Icon of the Seas garnered attention earlier this year for its luxurious features, including seven swimming pools and a record-breaking 17,000-square-foot water park. Despite the fire, the ship’s current schedule remains unaffected, and it is currently heading towards the Mexican island of Cozumel.

Royal Caribbean acknowledged that while minor fires are not common on cruise ships, they are handled swiftly and typically cause minimal disruption to passengers.
