Haider Sultan of Pakistan clinched the inaugural gold medal in the Weightlifting competition at the BRICS Games held in Kazan, Russia.
Sultan, who triumphed over tough competition from Russian weightlifters, secured Pakistan’s first gold medal in the Games, as stated in a press release.

Competing in the 61kg weight category, Sultan lifted a total of 261kg—115kg in the Snatch and 146kg in the Clean & Jerk.
His performance marked a pinnacle in his career, surpassing previous national and international achievements. Although Sultan initially lagged behind his Russian counterparts in the Snatch, his decisive third lift of 146kg in the Clean & Jerk solidified his victory at the BRICS Games.
Accompanying Sultan was his experienced coach, Shuja Ud Din Malik, a former Commonwealth Games gold medalist and record holder. Malik’s technical guidance and Sultan’s determination were pivotal in securing the victory.
Sultan expressed gratitude to the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) for their financial and administrative support throughout the tournament. Hailing from Gujranwala district in Punjab, Sultan represents the Pakistan Army at the national level.
Imdaullah Meman, the chef-de-mission, provided motivational support, enhancing Sultan’s morale during the competition.
Sultan’s triumph not only underscores his personal achievement but also highlights Pakistan’s prowess in international weightlifting competitions. His victory at the BRICS Games is a testament to his dedication and the support of Pakistan’s sports infrastructure.
