Heeramandi: SLB's Vision for Lahore's Red Light District

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming project, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” promises to be a visual spectacle like no other. In a recent interview with Architectural Digest, Bhansali provided insight into the elaborate set design and his creative process.

The inspiration for the grand set of “Heeramandi” traces back to Bhansali’s childhood, where he envisioned expanding the walls of his modest home to create more space. Now, with “Heeramandi,” he sees his childhood dreams realized on a grand scale, with craftsmen working tirelessly for seven months to construct the elaborate set in Mumbai’s Film City. The set features various intricately designed structures, including palaces, mosques, courtyards, and shops, all meticulously crafted under Bhansali’s supervision.

Every detail of the set, from the Mughal paintings adorning the walls to the colonial-era furniture, reflects Bhansali’s meticulous attention to detail and his commitment to creating a visually immersive experience. The set itself is described as a township, a testament to Bhansali’s vision and dedication to his craft.

For Bhansali, the set is not just a backdrop but an integral part of the storytelling process. He believes that architecture plays a crucial role in framing scenes and shaping the narrative. His creative process involves immersing himself in the world he’s creating, drawing inspiration from his surroundings and life experiences.

While the set of “Heeramandi” draws influences from various sources, including Mumbai’s red-light district and antique markets, Bhansali emphasizes that art is not bound by reality. He sees the set as a work of art in itself, akin to a painting or a piece of music, meant to evoke emotion and transport audiences to a different world.

Ultimately, Bhansali hopes to create frames that resonate with audiences on a profound level, evoking emotion and leaving a lasting impact. His dedication to his craft and his unwavering commitment to excellence shine through in every aspect of “Heeramandi,” making it one of his most ambitious projects to date.
