Instagram now let you download reels from the platform

Instagram has now included a function that lets users to take Reels made by others and share them outside of the service.

This change comes after competitor short video app TikTok offered this functionality for years, drawing users who liked watching short movies with the TikTok watermark outside of the platform.

Adam Mosseri, the company’s CEO, stated in an Instagram broadcast on Tuesday that customers in the United States will now be able to download Reels directly to their camera roll. Users can do so by tapping on the share symbol and selecting the Download option.

Mosseri stressed that only Reels from public accounts can be downloaded, and that public accounts can stop the download feature if they so desire.

Although Mosseri did not specify if downloaded Reels would include a watermark, the image he gave indicated that the downloaded films will include an Instagram logo in addition to the user name. It should be noted that Instagram has always allowed users to download their own Reels from draughts without a watermark.

Instagram introduced a policy in 2021 of not advertising videos with watermarks, including those from TikTok or any other source. Similarly, last August, YouTube implemented a logo-based watermark on downloaded Shorts, their short video product, in order to discourage cross-platform sharing.
