K-P MPAs Call for Release of Imran and His Wife

In Peshawar, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly witnessed a significant development on Friday as it unanimously approved a resolution calling for the release of imprisoned PTI founding chairman Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, along with the dismissal of all cases they were facing.

Former speaker of the assembly, Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani, presented the resolution, asserting that the federal government had levied “false cases” against Imran Khan, his wife, and other PTI activists. The House deemed this action unjust and urged for their immediate release.

Furthermore, the resolution called for a judicial inquiry into the incidents of violence that occurred on May 9 last year, demanding the public disclosure of CCTV footage capturing the events of that day.

During the assembly session, opposition lawmakers were notably absent, and the resolution received unanimous support from the members present. Speaker sought their opinions, and no objections were raised, resulting in the resolution’s passage without opposition.

It’s worth noting that the K-P Assembly session was convened without Governor Faisal Karim Kundi’s signature on the session’s summary. K-P Law Minister Aftab Alam explained that despite waiting for three days for the governor’s signature, it was not received. Consequently, the provincial government took its own constitutional course, and 38 members of the House submitted a requisition for the session.

This development has triggered a conflict between the provincial government and the governor, with tensions expected to escalate in the days ahead.
