102-Year-Old British Woman Celebrates Birthday with Thrilling Skydive

Manette Baillie, a 102-year-old British woman, celebrated her birthday on Sunday by skydiving from over 2,000 meters at Beccles airfield in eastern England. Previously, she had marked her 100th birthday by driving a Ferrari at 210 km/h around the Silverstone circuit.

Now the oldest British individual to skydive from such a height, Baillie shared that her leap was meant to inspire seniors to stay active. A former member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service during World War II and once married to a paratrooper, she admitted that the jump “scared her a bit,” causing her to “close her eyes tightly.”

After landing, she told the News Reporter that the experience left her breathless.

“I hope that people nearing 80 or 90 don’t give up on anything. We must keep going,” Baillie urged. She explained that she undertakes these daring activities to celebrate the good fortune of being “fit and healthy” at her age.

The skydive also helped her raise funds for charities like the East Anglian Air Ambulance. According to the News, an air ambulance saved her son’s life after a diving accident on the Isle of Wight in 1969, inspiring her long-time support for this local charity in eastern England.

Baillie shared that the idea of skydiving came to her recently after learning that a friend’s 85-year-old father had taken the plunge.

“If an 85-year-old man can do it, so can I,” she remarked confidently. However, she conceded that this might be her final fundraising challenge, humorously adding, “I think I’ll stick to knitting from now on.”

Until now, Verdun Hayes held the title of the oldest British skydiver, having jumped in May 2017 at the age of 101 years and 38 days.
