Deepak Perwani Criticizes Limitations in Pakistani Drama Industry

Renowned fashion designer and actor Deepak Perwani has raised concerns over the restrictive environment of Pakistan’s drama industry. Speaking on the DigiTales podcast, he pointed out how censorship regulations have stifled creativity, preventing the industry from evolving beyond repetitive storylines.

Perwani highlighted how Pakistani dramas, despite their international success, remain constrained by regulatory bodies like PEMRA. He criticized restrictions such as the ban on showing red blood, which hinders crime thrillers and realistic storytelling. “How come we don’t have true crime stories?” he questioned, emphasizing the limitations on content creators.

He also shed light on the absurdity of certain censorship rules, such as not allowing married couples to be shown sitting on the same bed. These restrictions, he argued, discourage filmmakers from exploring new genres, keeping Pakistani television stuck in a cycle of predictable narratives.

Beyond the industry’s struggles, Perwani also shared entertaining anecdotes from his fashion career, recalling a last-minute crisis where he had to replace a stolen sherwani for a crucial shoot. He concluded by stressing that without creative freedom, a strong cultural identity cannot be established.
