Karan Johar wanted to cast Aishwarya Rai in ‘Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham’ instead of Kajol.

In an unexpected revelation, filmmaker Karan Johar revealed that he had contemplated putting Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the part originally performed by Kajol in his 2001 movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Karan had Aishwarya in mind as a possible substitute in case Kajol was unable for the project.

However, fate had other plans, and he passed up the chance to work with the Devdas actor at the moment. Karan and Aishwarya finally collaborated in 2016 for the film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Karan discussed the casting process for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in an old, unearthed interview with Komal Nahta. “When I was casting for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, I learned that Kajol would be unable to participate because she was married and perhaps wanted to start a family.” I planned to approach Aishwarya. When I arrived at Kajol’s studio around 3 p.m. that day, I assumed she would say no, we would cry, and I would leave. “Of course, I felt bad because Kajol had previously worked with me,” Johar told The Indian Express.

He went on to say, “But I’m not sure what changed, Kajol actually wanted to do the film.” As a result, I did not go to meet Aishwarya. But Aishwarya was my choice, and the cycle of’missing’ began.”

The former Miss World affirmed the same, but she added that Karan did approach her about the project. “He (Karan Johar) did come to me with K3G also, but then, his script went in for a change,” she said in an interview with DNA, providing insight on the circumstances surrounding Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. So the character evolved. I know for a fact that what was told to me and what I saw on screen were not the same thing. Of course, Kajol was fantastic. But that likewise failed, and I was unable to complete it.”

The ensemble cast of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham included Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, and Kajol. The plot centres around an Indian family who faces internal issues after their adopted oldest son (played by Shah Rukh) marries a woman from a low-income household.

The narrative centres on how the younger son attempts to heal the misconceptions between his father and brother, which forms the story’s crux. The family drama is considered a classic.
