Renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil has criticized a recent fatwa by the Islamic Ideological Council, which declared VPN usage as “haram.” He argued that if VPNs are un-Islamic, then mobile phones should also fall under the same category, as they enable access to similar restricted content.

Speaking to a private channel, he labeled the decision narrow-minded and emphasized that mobile phones pose greater risks than VPNs.

The debate follows the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s recent crackdown on unregistered VPNs, citing security and content concerns. Critics, including PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto and tech experts, have questioned such measures amidst increasing internet restrictions.
