Another Sikh Leader Gunned Down in Canada

In 2017, Sukhdool Singh, a separatist from the Indian Punjab who had immigrated to Canada, was shot and killed in Winnipeg, Canada, by unidentified assailants.

The timing of this episode coincides with heightened hostilities between India and Canada, which accuses India of killing another Khalistani leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, on Canadian soil in June.

Sukhdool was connected to groups that support the creation of a separate Sikh state in India, or Khalistan.

According to Indian intelligence, these murders are the consequence of hostilities between different gangs vying for control of the Khalistani movement in order to make money and maybe to rule the immigration industry.

The passing of Sukhdool occurs amid high apprehension. Recently, a Khalistan leader named Hardeep Singh Nijjar who some in India referred to as a “terrorist” was shot and killed in Surrey, British Columbia. This episode caused controversy and strained relations between India and Canada on the diplomatic front.

Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, has expressed grave concerns on the possibility that the Indian government was involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He recently met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, where they spoke about this subject.

Because they were influential members of the Khalistani movement, these two murders are especially noteworthy. Many Sikhs, who are a minority in India and have historically experienced discrimination, identified with their advocacy.
