The agreement includes provisions for the transfer of US Navy ships to Indian shipyards for repair work, which will enhance defense cooperation between the two countries. President Biden has emphasized the crucial role of the US-India relationship in navigating the opportunities and complexities of the 21st century. The timing of this agreement is particularly significant, as the United States has expressed concerns over India’s close ties with Russia during the conflict in Ukraine. By strengthening its alliance with India, the US aims to forge a network of partnerships to counterbalance China’s influence.

An article by Professor Maya Jasanoff in The New York Times highlights the strategic importance of having India as an ally in what some experts refer to as “Cold War II” with China. This defense deal signifies a step towards building a united front against China’s growing military prowess.

During Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US, he addressed both houses of Congress and attended a special dinner at the White House. The centerpiece of the defense agreement involves the collaboration between General Electric’s aerospace unit and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics for the production of F414 engines. These engines will power India’s Tejas fighter jets.
