Taliban Say Detained British Couple Receiving Medical Care

The Taliban have confirmed that Peter and Barbie Reynolds, an elderly British couple detained in Afghanistan since February 2025, are receiving medical care. Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, assured that all their human rights are being respected, including access to medical treatment and occasional contact with their families.

Background of the Detention

Peter, 80, and Barbie, 76, had lived in Afghanistan for 18 years, running educational programs through their organization, Rebuild. They were arrested on February 1, 2025, while returning to their home in Bamyan province. Initially, they were separated and held in maximum-security prisons. Their arrest was reportedly due to a “misunderstanding” regarding fake Afghan passports, but no formal charges have been filed.

Health Concerns

Both individuals have experienced significant health issues during their detention. Peter has suffered from chest infections, eye infections, digestive problems, and tremors, possibly linked to a previous stroke. Barbie is reported to be anemic and frail. Despite receiving some medical care, their conditions remain serious.

Family Appeals

The couple’s four adult children have made public appeals urging the Taliban to release their parents before their health deteriorates further. They emphasize that their parents have dedicated their lives to helping Afghanistan and have not engaged in any criminal activities.

International Response

The United Nations has expressed concern over the couple’s detention, calling for their immediate release due to the risk of “irreparable harm or even death.” Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, but the lack of a British diplomatic presence in Afghanistan complicates the situation.

While the Taliban state that Peter and Barbie Reynolds are receiving medical care, their prolonged detention without charge and deteriorating health have raised significant international concern. Efforts continue to secure their release and ensure they receive the necessary medical attention.
