One-third of Gen Z and Millennials struggle with 'menu anxiety' in restaurants

A study conducted by the Italian restaurant chain Prezzo revealed that a significant number of Gen Z and Millennials experience ‘menu anxiety’ when dining out.

The research found that 34% of individuals aged 18 to 24 feel so anxious about choosing from the menu that they ask others to make their selections and communicate their orders to the waiter. Furthermore, 33% of those aged 25 to 34 base their food choices on what will look best on social media.

The survey delved into the dining preferences and concerns of young adults, uncovering that 32% of Millennials and Gen Z experience anxiety when placing orders. For 39.6% of 25 to 34-year-olds and 33.43% of 35 to 44-year-olds, the sheer number of menu items is a significant source of worry. Almost 23% of respondents stated that they would cancel restaurant plans if overwhelmed by the menu, while 38% of 18 to 24-year-olds avoid dining out unless they have thoroughly reviewed the menu in advance.

The study also highlighted that 21% of restaurant-goers prefer to have others order on their behalf, with higher instances among Gen Z and Millennials compared to Gen X and Baby Boomers.

Common causes of ‘menu anxiety’ include concerns about the cost of the meal (23%), not finding appealing options (17%), and the fear of regretting the order (12%).

To alleviate stress, 50% of respondents check the menu before visiting a restaurant, and 30% avoid dining out unless they have already browsed the menu in advance.
