OpenAI has unveiled its latest model, the GPT-4o, an upgrade to the GPT-4 model that powers ChatGPT, the company’s flagship product. During a livestream announcement, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati highlighted that the new update is significantly faster and enhances capabilities across text, vision, and audio.
The GPT-4o will be available for free to all users, with paying users receiving up to five times the capacity limits of the free version. According to an OpenAI blog post, the features of GPT-4o will be gradually rolled out, with extended red team access starting immediately. Both text and image capabilities will be available in ChatGPT as of today.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that the model is “natively multimodal,” meaning it can generate information and understand commands in voice, text, or graphics. Altman also noted that developers will have access to the API, which is priced lower and operates twice as fast as GPT-4-turbo.
Speech and video capabilities will be accessible to all users, regardless of their subscription status, in the coming weeks. The focus will be on understanding how to leverage speech and video to interact with ChatGPT-4o effectively. These updates are part of OpenAI’s mission to minimize the gap between humans and machines and democratize AI accessibility for everyone.
