Pakistan Welcomes ILO's Labor Protection Action Plan

In a notable address during the 349th Session of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Zulfiqar Ahmad, Secretary Workers’ Welfare Fund, representing the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, lauded the ILO’s proactive approach in developing a comprehensive action plan for labor protection spanning the years 2023-2029.

He began his statement by extending warm congratulations to the newly appointed Chairperson of the ILO Governing Body and expressed Pakistan’s confidence in the Chairperson’s leadership capabilities, anticipating significant progress in the global cause of labor protection and social security.

Ahmad stressed the crucial interplay between labor protection and social security as integral components of social welfare, aligning with the plan’s perspective on their mutually reinforcing relationship.

He underscored Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the well-being and safety of its workforce, in line with national goals and objectives. Recognizing the evolving nature of employment patterns, he emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of workers engaged in non-traditional work arrangements.

Of particular note was Ahmad’s endorsement of the plan’s emphasis on preventing the exclusion of workers in platform work, telework, and temporary employment from essential labor protection measures.

Pakistan firmly supports the ILO’s endeavors to safeguard workers’ rights and social security, with a vision of creating a sustainable work environment encompassing all forms of employment. The nation eagerly anticipates active participation in realizing the action plan’s objectives, working collectively toward a future where labor protection is universally accessible and unconditionally guaranteed.
