The extreme weather has damaged infrastructure across the country. Over 10 kilometers of roads and nine bridges have been destroyed. Flash floods and heavy downpours have also led to the complete destruction of 145 houses, with another 310 houses suffering partial damage.
Punjab Worst Hit by Monsoon Rains
Punjab has been the hardest hit region, with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reporting 44 deaths and 134 injuries due to rain-related incidents. In addition to the human toll, 50 houses were affected, and six cattle were killed. The causes of these fatalities include building collapses, lightning strikes, electrocution, and drownings in rain-fed streams and floodwaters.
In the past 24 hours, four more fatalities were confirmed in Okara and Bahawalnagar, with 25 others sustaining injuries from various rain-related accidents. Authorities are working to provide emergency medical care to those injured and have urged the public to remain cautious during this ongoing monsoon season.
More Monsoon Rains Forecasted Across Punjab
The PDMA has predicted more rain across the region, particularly in Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Sargodha, and Multan divisions, as the third spell of monsoon rains is expected to last until July 17. Local authorities have been instructed to accelerate drainage efforts in low-lying areas to prevent further flooding and reduce the potential for more damage.
As the monsoon rains continue, citizens are advised to exercise caution, especially around waterlogged areas, electric wires, and poles, to prevent further casualties. The ongoing rainstorm is a reminder of the importance of preparedness and safety during extreme weather events.
