Aseefa Bhutto Zardari Becomes the Only Lawmaker to Decline Salary in National Assembly

Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) and key figure in the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has made headlines as the only lawmaker among 314 members to refuse her monthly salary. The daughter of former President Asif Ali Zardari and sister of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Aseefa was elected unopposed from NA-207 and took office last year.

In June 2024, just two months after her swearing-in, Aseefa publicly declared her decision to decline any government salary or allowances, a move that has set her apart from her fellow parliamentarians. Since then, she has upheld this commitment, focusing her efforts on social initiatives and community empowerment.

Recently, Aseefa, in her capacity as the Chairperson of the Sindh Peoples Welfare Trust (SPWT) and First Lady of Pakistan, inaugurated the groundbreaking ceremony for The People’s School in Karachi. This ambitious educational project aims to provide high-quality education and opportunities for youth empowerment, reflecting the legacy of her mother, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who founded the SPWT in 1987.

Accompanied by key figures, including Chancellor of SZABIST and Sindh Minister for Health Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, the SPWT Board of Trustees, and notable leaders like Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Abdul Aziz Edhi, Aseefa launched this transformative project. The People’s School will feature modern facilities for primary and secondary education, creating a holistic learning environment for students.

This educational initiative, part of Aseefa’s broader vision for empowering communities, further cements her role as a leading figure in Pakistan’s social development and youth empowerment efforts.
