Energy Ministry Reveals Billions Spent on Free Electricity for Employees

Official documents presented in the National Assembly on Thursday revealed that the Ministry of Energy has been spending billions of rupees annually on providing free electricity to its public and corporate employees. The documents disclosed that more than 200,000 current and former employees of the ministry benefit from this policy, receiving a total of 441.5 million units of free electricity every year.

According to the report, serving employees receive 308.2 million units, while 133.2 million units are supplied to retired employees annually. The majority of the beneficiaries are from the Distribution Companies (DISCOs), where 149,000 employees—78,000 serving and 71,800 retired—enjoy free electricity.

Other significant beneficiaries include the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC), with 20,000 serving and 6,000 retired employees, followed by 7,315 serving and 5,381 retired employees of the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda). The Power Information Technology Company (PITC) also has 159 employees benefiting from this privilege.

This revelation has sparked debates about the financial burden of such perks and the need for reforms within the ministry’s spending policies.
