The European Union (EU) has introduced an ambitious project called ‘Improving Migration Management and Migrant Protection’ aimed at enhancing migrant protection in Pakistan and several other countries, including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan.
The project’s primary objectives include addressing various aspects of migration, particularly focusing on combating irregular migration, human trafficking, and migrant smuggling.
EU Ambassador Dr. Riina Kionka announced the project in Islamabad, highlighting the EU’s commitment to invest five million euros in expanding and sustaining migrant resource centers in Pakistan, located in Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar. These centers play a vital role in providing counseling and guidance to potential migrants and returnees, ensuring safe and informed migration practices.

One of the key goals of the project is to raise awareness about the risks associated with irregular migration, a prevalent practice in the Silk Route region. Migrants who choose this perilous route often become vulnerable to human trafficking, exploitation, and abuse during their migration journey, with migrant women facing particularly high risks.
The project will be implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), a European organization dedicated to addressing global migration challenges. ICMPD’s involvement is expected to increase awareness of the dangers of irregular migration and establish mechanisms for migrant protection. Additionally, the project will promote informed decision-making about migration at the individual, family, and community levels.
Given the ongoing threats and challenges posed by irregular migration in the Silk Route region, the EU’s investment underscores its commitment to mitigating these risks and improving the overall well-being of migrants. Through enhanced protection measures and informed guidance, this project aims to create a safer and more secure environment for individuals embarking on migration journeys in search of better opportunities and livelihoods.
