A man recently returned from the United States to Pakistan has confessed to murdering his teenage daughter due to his disapproval of her TikTok content, according to Pakistani police. The tragic incident occurred in Quetta, Balochistan’s capital, and has sent shockwaves through the country.
The suspect, identified as Anwar ul-Haq, initially claimed that unidentified gunmen were responsible for his daughter’s death. However, during questioning, he admitted to the crime, police official Babar Baloch confirmed. Haq had objected to his daughter’s lifestyle, social activities, and particularly her TikTok posts, which she had started sharing while living in the US and continued after their return to Pakistan.

Police senior investigator Zohaib Mohsin revealed that the family had been unhappy with her dressing and behavior, and authorities are investigating the possibility that the murder could be classified as an honour killing. Haq’s brother-in-law has also been arrested in connection with the incident.
Haq, who holds US citizenship after spending 25 years in the United States, was formally charged with murder. Police did not provide evidence of his citizenship, relying on his own testimony, and it remains unclear whether US authorities have been informed of the case. The victim’s family has not commented on the matter.
This tragic case has reignited debates around honour killings in Pakistan, where over 1,000 women are killed annually by relatives for actions deemed dishonorable. Social media use, personal relationships, and defiance of conservative norms are often factors in such killings. Pakistan, with a population of 241 million, has over 54 million TikTok users, but the app has faced multiple bans for content deemed inappropriate by the government.
The investigation into the case continues, with authorities analyzing the victim’s phone for further evidence.
