Federal Government Declares February 5 as Public Holiday to Observe Kashmir Day

The federal government of Pakistan has officially declared February 5 as a public holiday in observance of Kashmir Day, reaffirming its support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). In addition, the State Bank of Pakistan has announced its closure for the day, alongside all government offices, banks, and educational institutions nationwide, following an official notification.

Kashmir Day is observed annually to express solidarity with the Kashmiri people and their struggle for self-determination. Public rallies, seminars, and human chains will be organized across major cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi, with political leaders and activists expected to participate. The demonstrations will emphasize Pakistan’s position on the Kashmir dispute and call for global attention to the region’s plight.

The federal government had previously confirmed February 5 as a public holiday in its 2025 calendar. Provincial administrations, including Sindh, have followed suit, announcing the complete closure of government and semi-government institutions.

With markets, schools, and public spaces set to close, roads in key areas may experience disruptions due to scheduled processions. Kashmir Solidarity Day has been observed since 1990, as Pakistan advocates for the “right to self-determination” for Kashmiris, based on United Nations resolutions.

The longstanding Kashmir dispute remains a significant point of tension between Pakistan and India, with Pakistan consistently calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
