Flooding Hits Centuries-Old Katas Raj Temple in Chakwal Due to Heavy Rains

Continuous heavy rains have caused severe flooding in the historic Katas Raj temples, located in Chakwal district. The sacred pond, Pohar Talab, has overflowed for the first time in years, flooding nearby areas, including villages like Jhangar, Harl Amrila, and Mohri.

The Pohar Talab is a significant religious site for Hindus, with deep roots in Hindu mythology. It is believed to have been formed from the tears of Lord Shiva, mourning the death of his wife, Sati. The pond and surrounding temples are part of the ancient Katas Raj complex, which dates back to the Hindu Shahi period (6th to 10th century AD). This site holds immense historical and spiritual importance and serves as a key pilgrimage destination for Hindus worldwide.

The heavy rains have not only led to flooding but also caused significant damage to the temples. Floodwaters have entered the ancient structures, accelerating their deterioration and raising concerns about the preservation of this cultural heritage. The situation is worsened as local drainage systems have failed to cope with the ongoing downpours, further exacerbating the flooding.

The affected areas, including several villages in Chakwal, are facing challenges in evacuating to safer locations. While the rain continues, authorities have yet to provide an adequate response, leaving residents stranded and in need of assistance. The flooding in Chakwal and Katas Raj serves as a reminder of the growing threat of climate change, which has intensified the frequency and severity of such weather events.

As the situation continues to unfold, the preservation of Katas Raj and the welfare of local communities remain pressing concerns for both the local and national authorities.
