Gender-Based Violence in 2024 Alarming Numbers Revealed

In a troubling revelation, a total of 5,112 cases of gender-based violence were reported across Pakistan in 2024. The cases covered a wide spectrum of violent acts, including murder, abduction, rape, torture, and suicide. The figures were compiled by Sahil, a non-governmental organization, based on data from 81 newspapers across the country, including the capital territory, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B).

The report showed that 554 cases of violence occurred in December alone. From January to November, a staggering 1,273 murders, 799 abductions, 579 instances of torture, 533 rapes, and 380 suicides were reported, painting a grim picture of the state of gender-based violence in the country.

One concerning aspect of the report was that 5% of the victims were minors under the age of 18, while the remaining 95% were adults. The age group between 21 and 30 years emerged as the most vulnerable to abuse. The report further indicated that in 33% of the cases, the perpetrators were acquaintances, while 14% involved husbands and 10% were committed by strangers.

The provincial breakdown revealed that 73% of the cases were reported from Punjab, followed by 15% from Sindh, 8% from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 2% each from Islamabad, Balochistan, AJK, and G-B.
