In a significant move to curb losses, the government has decided to eliminate over 1,200 positions at the Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV), reducing the workforce by nearly 23%. This decision comes as part of a broader effort to streamline the state-owned entity’s operations and implement a new business plan aimed at reviving its financial standing.
On Friday, the Ministry of Information informed the Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises (CCoSOEs) of its plan to cut 1,232 positions from the total 5,442 sanctioned posts at PTV, highlighting the need for downsizing to reduce overhead costs. According to a statement issued by the finance ministry, the decision is expected to help the overstaffed organisation save substantial resources.

The cabinet committee, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, also approved business plans for PTV and the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC). These plans focus on improving operational efficiency through digital expansion, content licensing, and forming marketing partnerships. Additionally, the plans recommend utilising PTV’s unused assets and collaborating with the private sector to maximise revenue.
PTV News, which forms a core part of the corporation, reported lower-than-expected profits and higher-than-anticipated expenses during FY2023-24. While the projected income was Rs357 million, actual income fell to Rs200 million, with expenses rising to Rs688 million against a budgeted Rs585 million.
As part of its revival strategy, PTV is exploring various revenue-generating measures, including better use of its properties, sponsorships, and reducing operational costs. PBC, on the other hand, is focusing on income generation through improved programme content, better signal quality, and monetising its unutilised lands.
The committee emphasised the importance of swift and effective implementation of the proposed measures to achieve long-term sustainability for both broadcasters.
