Government Plans to Close Utility Stores Nationwide

The federal government is considering closing utility stores, which provide essential items at subsidized rates for low-income families, across the country.

The Secretary of Industry and Production confirmed this during a Senate standing committee meeting, stating it is part of a rightsizing initiative.

The Rightsizing Committee’s decisions will be submitted to the federal cabinet for approval.

The Ministry of Industry and Production will develop an action plan for the store closures and prepare a compensation package for employees.

This move towards privatization is driven by financial challenges. Utility Stores General Manager Inayatullah Dula also confirmed that a formal plan for the closures is in development.
