Heavy Snowfall Causes Avalanche in Neelum Valley, Claims Three Lives

Heavy snowfall continues to wreak havoc in the upper regions of Pakistan, with three lives lost in an avalanche in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Neelum Valley, while travel and communication have been severely disrupted in several areas.

According to local officials, the victims were three young men who were tragically buried under an avalanche in the mountainous Dodgai area of Neelum Valley. Rescue efforts to recover their bodies were delayed due to extreme weather conditions and resumed on Tuesday morning after being halted overnight.

Akhtar Ayub, in charge of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), explained that continuous snowfall in the region has made rescue operations extremely challenging. He further mentioned the difficulties caused by the absence of mobile signals, which has hampered communication in the affected area.

In other parts of Neelum Valley, Grace Valley experienced over one foot of snow, while Sardari, Urang Kel, and Sargan Jagran also reported significant snowfall. The heavy snow accumulation has led to the closure of several roads, cutting off access to remote settlements in Neelum and Leepa valleys, leaving many areas isolated.
