India Unannounced River Spillway Release has Caused Severe Flooding in Pakistan

India has opened the spillways of the Chenab and Ravi rivers without prior warning, leading to significant flooding in thousands of villages and inundating large areas of land in Pakistan. Reports indicate that this sudden release of water has caused severe disruptions.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued flood warnings due to rapidly rising water levels at Qadirabad Barrage on the Chenab River. Water flow in the Chenab is expected to increase from 200,000 cusecs to 250,000 cusecs.

Similarly, the Ravi River is anticipated to have a water flow ranging from 40,000 to 55,000 cusecs at Jassar and Shahdara. The PDMA Punjab has issued a low-level flood warning for these areas as a precaution.

Authorities have urged residents in the affected regions to move to safer locations due to the emergency situation caused by the unexpected water release.

This incident has raised concerns about regional water management practices and their impact on neighboring countries.
