Warning Issued: Islamabad at Risk of Another Severe Hailstorm

Following the destructive hailstorm that struck Islamabad, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a new warning about the likelihood of more severe hailstorms in the coming days.

The unexpected storm, which hit amidst a sudden drop in temperature during a heatwave, caused significant damage across the city, shattering windows of hundreds of vehicles and damaging several buildings, including part of the iconic Faisal Mosque. Eyewitnesses reported seeing roads and parks covered in a thick layer of hail, with many vehicles left vulnerable to the storm’s effects.

The force of the storm was so intense that vehicles parked outdoors across Islamabad had their windows broken. Experts have linked these extreme weather patterns to climate change, noting that while such events aren’t entirely rare, their frequency and severity have been increasing in recent years. A PMD official highlighted that climate change is influencing the region’s weather patterns, contributing to these unpredictable events.

The storm has sparked concerns among residents, some of whom are interpreting the weather as a form of divine retribution, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding such extreme weather events. The PMD clarified that these storms are typically caused by abrupt changes in weather, especially when shifting from heatwaves to rain.

The department has also warned of the possibility of a heatwave in the coming days, which could bring back intense temperatures. Citizens have been urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions against the ongoing unpredictable weather.
