Karachi Bar President Aamir Warraich Attacked Amid Ongoing Canal Dispute

Aamir Nawaz Warraich, President of the Karachi Bar Association, was violently attacked on Tuesday night, an incident he believes was directly linked to his vocal opposition to the Cholistan Canal Project.

The assault took place while Aamir Warraich was dining with colleagues at an eatery on Karachi’s Chundrigar Road. A group of unidentified men targeted him in what appears to be a planned attack. Karachi police are currently reviewing CCTV footage and collecting witness accounts to investigate the matter.

Despite sustaining injuries, Aamir Warraich described the attack as an assassination attempt but affirmed his resolve to continue opposing the controversial canal project. He confirmed that the planned Bar convention would proceed without interruption. Notably, he has chosen not to file a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the incident.

Issuing a strong statement, Warraich warned that if the government does not reverse its decision on the Cholistan Canal Project within 72 hours, the Bar would move to shut down the Sindh-Punjab border in protest.

The Cholistan Canal Project, which proposes the construction of six canals—two each in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan—to irrigate 4.8 million acres of barren land, has become a major source of conflict.

It has sparked serious backlash in Sindh, where critics argue it threatens the region’s ecological stability and water share from the Indus River. The Sindh Assembly has already passed a unanimous resolution in March opposing the project, escalating tensions further.
