Karachi Faces Surge in Lung Disease Linked to Pigeons

Pigeons

Karachi is witnessing a sharp rise in Bird Fancier’s Lung (BFL), a rare but serious lung condition caused by inhaling microscopic particles from pigeon feathers and droppings. Hospitals are now reporting 15–25 cases weekly — a steep jump from just one or two cases a decade ago.

The disease, which can progress to irreversible lung scarring or even require transplants, is primarily affecting women and the elderly. Experts blame the surge on increased pigeon-feeding spots across the city and poor ventilation in homes.

With Pakistan lacking lung transplant facilities, health professionals urge preventive measures such as mask usage, regular air conditioner maintenance, and avoiding pigeon exposure indoors.

Public health advocates are calling for urgent government action, including awareness drives and regulation of urban bird-feeding practices.
