In a blow to its global image, Karachi has been ranked 170th out of 173 cities in the 2025 Global Liveability Index by the Economist Intelligence Unit, placing it among the world’s least liveable cities.
The ranking reflects serious concerns in key areas such as stability, healthcare, infrastructure, education, and environment. Only three cities ranked lower than Karachi, with Lagos, Nigeria coming in last.

Despite the grim rating, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab rejected the report, calling it disconnected from the city’s true potential and resilience. “My city was, is, and will always remain a great city,” he said.
Wahab defended Karachi’s role as Pakistan’s economic and cultural hub, arguing that its ability to attract people nationwide is proof of its value. He stressed that Karachi’s challenges should be addressed by locals, not foreign analysts.
The top-ranked cities for 2025 include Vienna, Copenhagen, and Zurich — all known for their high-quality infrastructure, healthcare, and living standards.
