Authorities continue their sweeping crackdown following the dramatic mass escape from Karachi’s Malir District Jail, where investigations remain active. In the past 24 hours alone, 27 more fugitives have been re-arrested, bringing the total number of recaptured prisoners to 105. Still, 111 inmates remain on the run.
Citywide search operations are ongoing, and law enforcement is conducting targeted raids based on compiled profiles of the escapees. Interestingly, some prisoners have returned voluntarily. One such inmate, Muhammad Asif—jailed in a theft case—was brought back by his maternal uncle. Asif told reporters the jailbreak followed strong earthquake tremors that damaged a wall and caused panic. Barrack doors reportedly swung open, allowing inmates to flee through the main gate in the ensuing chaos.

Officials have indicated that inmates who return on their own will be shown leniency, while those avoiding arrest will face strict consequences. The ongoing efforts aim to restore full order and accountability in the wake of the incident.
Meanwhile, operations at Malir Jail have resumed normally, and visitation restrictions—imposed after the escape—have now been lifted. Security has been visibly tightened to prevent any recurrence.
