Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has disclosed that his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, suggested acquiring Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and rebranding it as “Air Punjab.” Speaking to reporters in New York, Nawaz mentioned that Maryam encouraged the family to consider purchasing the national carrier following reports of a low bid in the privatization process.
According to Nawaz, Maryam’s vision is to revamp PIA, transforming it into a top-tier airline with a new identity under the proposed name. This rebranding, she believes, would revitalize the airline’s image and make it a symbol of regional pride. The Sharif family has shown interest in opportunities that could potentially bring significant economic benefit to Pakistan and particularly Punjab.

The idea comes as the government continues its efforts to privatize PIA, which has faced ongoing financial challenges. Maryam, who currently serves as the Chief Minister of Punjab, sees this potential acquisition as a chance to elevate the province’s standing in the aviation industry.
While the proposal has sparked conversation, it remains uncertain if the Sharif family will move forward with the acquisition. However, Nawaz’s comments have highlighted Maryam’s ambitions for Punjab and her strategic vision for the province’s role in the country.
