Pakistan and India Swap Prisoners Lists as Part of 2008 Bilateral Agreement

On Monday, a spokesperson from the Foreign Office confirmed that Pakistan and India exchanged updated lists of prisoners, as required by a 2008 bilateral agreement.

Pakistan submitted a list of 246 Indian prisoners to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, which includes 53 civilians and 193 fishermen. In return, India shared details of 463 Pakistani prisoners currently held in Indian jails, consisting of 382 civilians and 81 fishermen.

This exchange is part of a mutual agreement signed in 2008, which stipulates that both nations must exchange prisoner lists twice annually, on January 1 and July 1.

Pakistan has called on India to immediately release those prisoners who have already completed their jail terms and requested consular access to all Pakistani detainees to help verify their identities more efficiently.

The Foreign Office also stressed that the protection and welfare of Pakistani prisoners remains the responsibility of the Indian authorities.
