The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has opted to enlist the support of the Pakistan army for the forthcoming general election scheduled for February 8, 2022. In a letter addressed to the Ministry of Interior, the ECP has requested information on security arrangements for the election.
The ministry has been instructed to furnish a report on the availability of security personnel across the four provinces and Islamabad by November 27.

The communication emphasizes the constitutional obligation of federal and provincial authorities to assist the ECP, and it underscores the responsibility of law enforcement agencies in maintaining law and order throughout all constituencies. The decision to involve the Pakistan army stems from the need to address a shortage of police personnel at polling stations. Notably, earlier in the year, the Pakistan army had declined election duty citing prevailing security concerns.
Meanwhile, the ECP has initiated preparations for the February 8 election, with the commencement of the printing of final electoral rolls. Additionally, the commission is expected to release the code of conduct for the elections in the coming days.
