Pakistan Faces Ongoing Issues with frequent Internet Disruptions

Pakistan is facing a deepening internet crisis marked by mismanagement, unclear communication, and delayed infrastructure projects. From delayed messages to severe latency issues, millions are experiencing significant disruptions in their digital connectivity.

Shahzad Arshad, Chairman of WISPAP, expressed grave concerns, highlighting the country’s vulnerabilities and the need for a comprehensive infrastructure overhaul rather than temporary fixes. He stressed the importance of establishing multi-gigabit Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) across telecom regions to protect the digital economy, similar to measures in developed nations.

The situation is further complicated by delays in launching the PEACE cable and the China-Pakistan fiber link, with unclear timelines adding to public and business uncertainty. The Islamabad High Court has criticized the government’s insufficient responses, which have only heightened frustration.

Arshad noted that government representatives have indicated that the internet issues might persist longer than expected, prompting demands from various sectors for a robust plan to prevent future disruptions. The crisis has sparked a critical discussion on the sustainability and resilience of Pakistan’s internet infrastructure.

Without immediate, strategic action, Pakistan risks severe economic consequences and a widening digital divide. The future of the nation’s digital landscape depends on transparency, commitment, and the fortification of its internet infrastructure.
