Pakistan on Monday informed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) about escalating tensions in South Asia following the killing of 26 people in the Indian-Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) tourist area of Pahalgam. The UNSC convened a special in-camera session at Pakistan’s request, where Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, provided a detailed briefing.
The emergency meeting was attended by all 15 Security Council members, including the five permanent members. Ambassador Iftikhar expressed gratitude to the council for addressing the matter, highlighting the Kashmir dispute as a lingering issue between India and Pakistan for over seven decades. He voiced strong concerns over India’s recent unilateral actions and reiterated Pakistan’s firm stance on safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The ambassador condemned human rights violations in IIOJK and criticized India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a breach of international law. Regarding the Pahalgam incident, he made clear that Pakistan had no involvement and offered full cooperation in any transparent and independent international investigation into the attack.
Stressing that lasting peace in South Asia hinges on resolving the Kashmir dispute in line with the wishes of the Kashmiri people, Ambassador Iftikhar underlined that dialogue based on mutual respect, dignity, and sovereignty remains Pakistan’s preferred approach for ensuring regional stability.
