Pakistan Reaffirms Support for Kashmir’s Right to Self-Determination on UNCIP Anniversary

Pakistan has once again pledged its unwavering support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif calling on the international community to uphold the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Marking the 76th anniversary of the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan (UNCIP) resolution, adopted on January 5, 1949, President Zardari highlighted Pakistan’s continued political, diplomatic, and moral backing for Kashmiris. The resolution guarantees a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices to allow the people of Jammu and Kashmir to decide their future.

Zardari condemned India for denying Kashmiris this right for more than seven decades and criticised India’s actions since August 5, 2019, which aim to alter the region’s demographic and political landscape. He expressed Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Kashmiri cause, asserting that the people’s struggle for freedom remains resolute despite systematic oppression.

“These measures are designed to turn Kashmiris into a disempowered community in their own homeland. The international community, particularly the UN, must fulfil its duty to help Kashmiris achieve their right to self-determination,” Zardari emphasized.

Echoing these sentiments, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged global powers to honour their commitments to Kashmir, noting that the Right to Self-Determination Day, observed on January 5, serves as a reminder of the Kashmiri people’s long-standing plight.

Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that the right to self-determination is a fundamental principle of the UN Charter and international law. He stressed that the global community should demand an end to human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), while also condemning India’s attempts to alter the region’s demographic makeup.

The Prime Minister emphasized, “India’s illegal actions since August 2019 aim to turn the majority Kashmiri people into a disempowered minority in their own homeland, and the international community must take decisive action.”
